ALANYA HISTORY
The very popular resort centre of Alanya lays at the foot of a rocky promontory which sticks out between two sandy beaches and is headed by the 13 th century seljuk fortress which is one of the most magnificent sights on the Mediterranean .
Alanya is a well equipped, cosmopolitan resort with a touch of turkish traditionalism
thrown in for good measure. The city appeals to a wide range of holidaymakers and
visitors and is known as the turkish Riviera . The main road runs along side Cleopatra
beach and is lined with countless boutiques selling handbags, souvenirs, leather
goods, jewellery, clothes and much much more. Whether taking photographs from the
fortress at sunset or strolling through the bazaars and shopping areas this is a
great place to stay. The harbour, the beautiful beaches, the brilliant clear turquoise
waters and the foothills of the taurus mountains sloping down to the sea, makes
Alanya as picturesque as anywhere on the Mediterranean . Why not travelling up the
taurus mountains to the special viewing platform built by the council to see some
breathtaking views of the town and castle of Alanya. Alanya is full of restaurants
offering a wide range of cuisines, and those situated on the harbour side often
stay open till late. Try the ocakbasi style restaurants which serve very high standard
traditional turkish food and for very reasonable prices.
If you are a night owl and crave entertainment Alanya
is well known for its great selection of discos and nightclubs along the mile long
harbour. Live turkish music bars are also popular. If you prefer a more quite and
relaxed , maybe romantic evening then there are a number of smaller romantic restaurants
based on the hillside as you climb up to the castle. These restaurants offer a choice
of food as well as views of Alanya which are second to none.
Alanya is a shoppers paradise, with high quality leather
goods, a fine selection of gold and silver shops and famous turkish carpets. The
clothing boutiques are also not to be missed. But don't forget to bargain !! All
